Slash the Cost of Spending Abroad

Holiday season is in full swing! So how can we save money while abroad?

First of all, don’t get caught out with exchange fees and charges. Most banks charge 3% when using their cards abroad and no one wants to carry money everywhere anymore.
I have a Chase debit card. It gives a near-perfect exchange rate in every country and you earn 1% cash back on spending both in the U.K and abroad up to £15 per month. If you’re already on holiday and need it straight away, you can sign up on the app, get accepted in minutes without a credit check and then you can add it to your phone’s wallet and start paying with it. You can withdraw up to £1,500 fee-free per month.

You can sign up here (not a referral link): https://www.chase.co.uk/gb/en/

I also have a Revolut pre-paid card because a girl needs options! You can also sign up straight away with this like with Chase. It gives near-perfect exchange rates Monday-Friday up to £1000 per month (1% fee on weekends or over £1000). The first five ATM withdrawals are free each month (up to £200) then there’s a 2% fee after (minimum £1). You can actually lock in an exchange rate before going away if you have a suspicion that it might go up in the meantime although you can never really predict this so I find it to be of limited value.

When they ask on the card machines when paying if you would like to pay in pounds or the local currency, always choose the local currency. The card machine’s bank will charge an exchange rate otherwise. Beware of local ATM charges too.
